When a product catalog has several thousand items, lots of variants and translations into several languages, and has to feed a store, a marketplace and a distributor file at the same time, spreadsheets stop being enough. B2B companies in industry, manufacturing and distribution all reach the same question at some point: which PIM system should we choose?
The three options considered most often are Pimcore, Ergonode and Akeneo. Each is an open source project, each is built on PHP and Symfony, and each has a free and a commercial edition. That is where the similarities end. Let’s look at how they differ and when each one is worth choosing.
Pimcore
Pimcore is an Austrian platform from 2013, built from the start as a system for managing all of a company’s digital data in one place. It is not a pure PIM: it is a PIM, DAM, MDM and CMS in one.
Pros:
- Everything in one place. Pimcore combines product data management (PIM), digital assets such as images and videos (DAM), customer and supplier data (MDM) and website content (CMS). Companies that want a single source of truth for all their digital data will find a complete tool here.
- A lot of flexibility. The modular architecture lets you build your own data types, relationships between objects and processing logic. It can be adapted to very non-standard business requirements.
- A wide range of integrations. Pimcore integrates with Magento, Shopware, Sylius, WooCommerce, SAP, Comarch and many other systems. We have hands-on experience integrating Pimcore with Magento, described in one of our case studies.
- Free Community edition. The source code is public and you host it yourself. The Enterprise edition (SaaS/cloud) is for companies with enterprise requirements.
Cons:
- A high barrier to entry. Pimcore is a system for experienced developers. Configuration, building data structures and integrations take time and technical know-how.
- The complexity can be overkill. Companies that only need a PIM may find that Pimcore offers too many features they will never use, and every extra layer is one more thing to maintain.
- Uneven documentation. Some of it is thorough, some of it means digging into the code or asking the community.
Best suited for: large companies that need a central repository not only for product data, but also for digital assets and customer data. Projects where the PIM has to be tightly linked with a CMS and DAM in one tool.
Ergonode
Ergonode is a Polish PIM from Poznań, built from scratch with an API-first architecture. The first public version came out around 2019. It is the youngest of the three, but also the most modern in terms of architecture.
Pros:
- GraphQL API first. Ergonode treats the API as the system’s main interface. Product data can be pulled through GraphQL into any frontend: Magento, Shopware, Next.js, a mobile app or an export file for a distributor.
- A modern interface. The Vue.js frontend makes day-to-day work for product managers quick and clear. Onboarding new team members takes noticeably less time than with enterprise-class systems.
- Advanced attribute management. Attribute types, groups, product profiles, validation, translations per language and per channel. All configured in the interface, without code.
- Built-in multilingual support. Translations are part of the core, not bolted on as a module. Each attribute value can have a language version assigned to a specific sales channel.
- A Polish product. A Polish community, support in Polish and a good understanding of the CEE market.
Cons:
- A smaller connector ecosystem. Akeneo has official integrations with hundreds of systems. Ergonode offers connectors for Magento and Shopware; other integrations have to be built through the API or ordered as custom work.
- No built-in DAM. You manage digital assets in a separate tool. For companies that want PIM and DAM together, that is a limitation.
- A growing but still small community. Fewer ready-made guides and public solutions than for the older platforms.
Best suited for: headless and composable commerce projects where the storefront pulls data through GraphQL. Companies with complex attribute structures and a multilingual catalog. Teams that value good UX and quick onboarding for content editors.
Akeneo
Akeneo is a French PIM from Nantes, founded in 2013, and today it has the largest user base of the three. It focuses only on product information management and on doing that well.
Pros:
- The largest connector ecosystem. The Akeneo App Store has more than 200 ready-made integrations with e‑commerce platforms (Magento, Shopware, Salesforce Commerce), ERP systems, marketplaces and marketing tools. In many cases you don’t need to write your own connectors.
- Very good UX. For years Akeneo has promoted itself as having the best interface for non-technical users. Content editors pick up the system quickly.
- The “Channel Activation” concept. Akeneo thinks in terms of distributing products to channels: each sales channel can have its own set of attributes, labels and data completeness rules.
- Three plans for different needs. Community Edition (free, open source, self-hosted), Growth (SaaS for growing companies) and Enterprise (SaaS with an advanced SLA and support).
- A mature platform. More than 10 years on the market, extensive documentation, a large forum and an active developer community.
Cons:
- PIM only. Akeneo has no built-in DAM or MDM. Companies that need to manage digital assets or customer data have to integrate a separate system.
- The Enterprise edition costs money. Community Edition is free, but as requirements grow it quickly turns out that the features you need are only in the paid plans.
- Configuration needs an expert. Despite the good UX, rolling out Akeneo in a larger project still requires technical support for configuration and integrations.
Best suited for: companies selling through many channels at once: an online store, marketplaces, B2B distribution and exports to partners. Organisations with large content teams where UX and a short learning curve are a priority. Projects that need many ready-made integrations without writing code from scratch.

Summary
None of these three systems is the best for everyone. The choice depends on your technical architecture, the size of your content team and what you plan to do with your product data.
Choose Pimcore when you want one tool for PIM, DAM and MDM and you have access to an experienced Pimcore developer.
Choose Ergonode when you are building a headless storefront, you care about an API-first approach and quick onboarding for editors, and you can handle additional integrations through the API.
Choose Akeneo when you sell through many channels at once, have a large content team and need ready-made connectors rather than writing your own integrations.
We work with all three systems and help companies choose a solution that fits their actual requirements, not a vendor’s sales presentation. If you have a product catalog and are thinking about a PIM, let’s talk.
