Integrating a B2B platform: ERP, PIM, WMS, CRM, how to do it right
The order in which to connect external systems to a sales platform, and the mistakes that stretch out integration projects.
Integrating a B2B platform with ERP, PIM, WMS, and CRM can make or break the whole rollout. Michał Zabielski splits the topic into a technical layer and a business layer, and argues the second one fails more often.
The technical layer
Direction of communication (one-way or bidirectional), the type of data exchanged, customers, orders, catalogue, stock, the quality of the APIs on the external systems’ side, and the ongoing cost of maintaining the integration. All of this needs settling before any tooling decision gets made.
The business layer, and where it usually breaks
Whether the platform’s processes match existing offline operations, source data quality (“garbage in, garbage out”), and whether the team is ready to change how it works. Zabielski is direct here: tools need to be adapted to a company’s processes, not the other way round. Failed integrations most often trace back to poor data structure in the PIM, ERP, or CRM, not to problems with the platform itself.
The recommendation is simple: audit and clean up data before integrating, and get expert input before picking systems, the cost of a wrong choice at the start tends to multiply well beyond the original estimate during the rollout.
