Michał Zabielski takes on the part of the buying journey no dashboard will ever show: the research, recommendations and conversations during which a B2B buyer picks vendors before ever getting in touch with them.

What is the Dark Funnel?

The Dark Funnel covers every brand interaction your analytics tools don’t record: early research, word of mouth, links shared in private messages and closed groups (so-called dark social). According to figures quoted in the episode, it accounts for 70-80% of the entire buying journey.

Why it matters so much in B2B

In B2B sales, much of the decision is made while the shortlist is being drawn up, and the companies that make it are the ones the buyer already trusts and sees as experts. Zabielski cites a figure of around 68% for how much this stage shapes vendor selection. If you don’t exist in the buyer’s mind before first contact, you often don’t get a shot at the conversation.

Eight strategies for the Dark Funnel

  1. Share valuable content without gating it. Material locked behind a form doesn’t travel between people, and travelling is the whole point in the Dark Funnel.
  2. Build lead magnets that actually calculate something. Calculators, comparisons and configurators give buyers real value before they ever talk to sales.
  3. Make several people’s expertise visible. An expert image built on a single leader is fragile, a team visibly sharing knowledge builds trust more broadly.
  4. Organise events and show up at them. Meetups and conferences are where the recommendations you’ll never see in analytics are born.
  5. Analyse intent, not just interactions. Repeat visits or time spent on the pricing page say more about buying readiness than click counts alone.
  6. Ask customers how they heard about you. Unobtrusively, at checkout or in the first call, it’s the simplest way to peek into the invisible part of the funnel.
  7. Use comparisons on your platform. Which products customers compare side by side on a B2B platform tells you which content topics they’re waiting for.
  8. Build credibility through accreditation. Certifications and proven competencies, in SEO auditing for example, shorten the buyer’s path to trust.

The Dark Funnel can’t be fully measured, but it can be influenced: with content people want to pass on, and with signals worth reading rather than just counting visits.
